I am really tired of seeing so much from my kitchen go to waste along with the  flowers I cut back, etc...  I would really like to start composting to take advantage of all that stuff.  My biggest problem is that my own lawn has so many weeds I don't think I can use them in the compost.  I have plenty of leaves and coffee grounds, fruit peels and stuff like that but I am really unsure how to get the whole thing started and how to go about it without the grass clippings.  I would love any advice anyone may have.  Thanks.

Composting is definitely not rocket science, so don't worry.  What's the worst that could happen?

From the sounds of what you're planning to compost, you might need to add some things to lighten the pile a little.  Twigs, oak leaves (you need the stiffer brown textures rather than soggy leaves); I would also limit the coffee grounds somewhat, if you're talking about a pot of coffee a day.  Might become really acidic.

With reference to the grass clippings, if you're cutting the lawn regularly and things aren't going to seed, the weeds aren't necessarily a problem.  If you're adding weed seeds to the compost pile, it might become an issue, but if you're using the compost back on the same property, I'm not sure the weeds are a huge deal.

I got very excited when I heard that HRH the Prince of Wales allows his lawns to be natural growth, without focusing on what's considered a weed and what isn't.  It's all just kept mowed, and not even edged!  If it's good enough for Prince Charles, it works for me!  I tell my neighbors I have an "herbal lawn"!

In all seriousness, contact your local county extension office, and I'm sure they have numerous FREE flyers about composting to get you started.

Tim

First thing Dr. Compost prescribes for you?
A worm bin. It's way easier, cleaner and fun that you could realize. Just get one and some worms. It's easy as falling off a log.. with worms in it.
Second. I compost without grass clippings. I leave the clipping on the lawn! Just get a bin, make a pile... either works!
I would like to say there are very few WRONG ways to compost, I mean, I do recognize some are better than others... but I just chuck stuff in the bin and it cooks! I don't layer, I throw weeds in... I take lots of free grounds from Starbucks... I can't believe what I get out of it.

I understand people write whole books about how to compost or how to have a worm bin. It's just easier than all that. I don't want to see anyone discouraged from trying because they think it's as complicated as all that, because in the end.... it's really just Mother nature doin' her thang...

I couldn't agree more!

My dad, the old Yankee farmer, throws everything organic in a big pile at the back of his property near his vegetable garden, which has been going strong in that spot for 40 plus years.  The pile sits there rotting all through the fall and winter.  In the spring, he scoops the mixture into his chipper/shredder, and shoots it out in a thin layer over the garden as a thin top dressing.  Definitely not scientific, but  works like magic!
