"If you can't grow cosmos, go golfing," is the expression I've heard, and it is justified! Do you all realize just how many varieties of cosmos there are? Cosmos bipinnatus is the species from which many of the cultivars are derived - Daydream is my favorite: Then there are singles, doubles, all kinds all colors! Fluted white petals! Creamy picotee edges! There are extra tall plants and dwarf plants, there are so many viarieties I thought about creating a cosmo library! THEN, on top of all those, are the C. sulphureus which are mostly red, yellow, orange...

Cosmos is one of those plants that makes me happy, and brings me a reality check. However caught up I can get in the latest and most esoteric flowers, the cosmos is always there, bouncing and bobbing across the top of the bed! I would definitely agree that it's one of the all time best!

http://forum.hortmag.com/photo.aspx?photoid=93&asortType=6&apage=2 is a photo of my first year, first-time-back-in-a-temperate-climate cosmo, I've misnamed the photo, but that is a Daydream Cosmo blossom. They're so EASY! I staggered the plantings in three-week intervals, and pinched back quite a few of the earliest plants, and progressively fewer out of each successive planting, and I had cosmos right up to the frost. They got tall, maybe four feet, and I had interplanted them with some absolutely ravishing delicate-pink-and-pale-lemon gladiolas, and it was just smashing! The whole thing cost me about five bucks for two packs of seeds, plus maybe eight dollars for the sack of gladiola bulbs, plus a whole lot of grunt work - really it was a fabulous display for less than twenty dollars.

I just scavenged photos of every cosmo variety I could find, from Swallowtail, Park and Burpee. They are all in an album of photos in the Photos section, it's titled "Cosmo Varieties", I think. I set the album so you can add your own photos.
