Hey Amanda - This looks like it'll be a fun project! Just a thought on your dead tree: instead of ripping it out, why not train a white-flowered vine (wisteria, clematis, moonflower) up it, and put it to good use?

I actually planted Moon Flower Vine there to grow up it, then accidentally ripped it out thinking it was bindweed. I was in a tizzy, what can I say?
I barely touched the tree right after I shot that and it cracked off that the base. Go figure.
I bought it for $5 because it had been nibbled on by rabbits, I thought I'd give it a chance.
