Are there any other lily lovers out there and if so what are some of your favorites. I can't say I've ever seen a lily I don't like but the must haves in my garden are: Scheherazade, White Butterflies, Black Beauty, Red Velvet, Regale album, Pavia, and Kiss Me Kate. Those are tops among the lilies currently in my garden. What are some of your faves?

You read my mind! I was just looking through some magazines and catalogs this morning to come up with a few new lilies for the perennial bed! Thanks!

I love lilies! Some of my favorites are: 'Scherezade (I don't think I spelled that right, but it's late and I'm tired and I don't really give a rip); 'Red Hot', 'Stargazer', 'Elodie', 'Fata Morgana' and 'Tiger Babies'.

Generally, the orientals don't do especially well in my area. I do have a clump of Stargazers and Casa Blanca that have hung in there for 10 + years now but many of them are short-lived here. I seem to find myself drawn to those with a candelabra type bloom arrangement and a long bloom period....Scheherazade, White Butterflies etc. W. B. usually gives me a solid month of blooms, last year I had over 40 blooms on Scheherazade, a few less this year. I guess maybe it's time to dig and divide. I don't have that collection from W. F. F, but have seen it in the catalog. I do have an asiatic from them I think it's Atlantis, a soft silvery pink. So Tim, what are you eyeing for planting this fall? I've been checking the website for The Lily Garden, haven't made any decisions yet. I'm also finding I like the LA's a great deal. Pavia was new for me this year, a beautiful clear yellow and I love the ripe raspberry color of Fangio. Well, gotta run to a meeting. TTUL

Love your pics of American Dream, L taliense, and Morden Butterfly. I haven't seen the last two before, I may have to look for them next year. With the weather we've been having, I'm glad I didn't order any newbies this year. I still have several clumps that I would like to dig and divide. Hopefully I'll get some fall weather yet that will allow it.

Garden Girl mentioned that lilies (or was it oriental lilies) don't do too well in MN. I'm relatively new to the lily game, but my Casa Blancas have been in place and doing well for nearly 10 years (Kansas City area). I tend to prefer the oriental lilies because of the fragrance, but must say that some of the new -- well, more than some -- varieties of other lilies are gorgeous and extremely tempting. I have a running battle, though, with deer which like to eat the tops (flower buds), and rabbits which slice the young stems in two. It takes asiduous application of deer repellant to rescue the plants from destruction. Of course, I have to do that for the early spring bulbs, tulips, tender young growth on shrubs, etc.,; you get the picture. The rewards are well worth the effort.

It's the Orientals that don't last to long in MN. There are some exceptions. I've had Casa Blanca and Star Gazer for 10-15 years, but many of them fade away after 2 or 3 years, they like a more acidic soil than what I have in my area of the state and a longer growing season to ripen the foliage and feed the bulbs. I just don't bother with them anymore. The flowers are gorgeous but the 2 or 3 blooms I get from most them just aren't worth the space in my garden to me. I prefer the asiatics and the OT's I 've grown as well as several of the LA's. I have several trumpets that do well too and Regal album is always a favorite. Once you've been bitten bythe lily bug it's hard to stop.

Do any of you folks out west of here have the lily leaf beetle in your area yet? We've had it here in western NY for a couple years now, and it's a bear. I don't generally notice them until the leaves of a plant are chewed beyond belief, and then it's too late. They're bright red/orange with some black on them, and they seem to hit the Orientals the hardest. Cornell says to keep examining your plant's leaves for excrement (usually on the underside), and pick the buggers off. That's what I'm going to try to do, since I'm vehemently opposed to chemicals. I would be interested to see if it's advancing south or west of here. Anyone?

I've read about them, but thankfully they aren't here in MN, not yet anyhow. Hopefully, by the time they make it here all of you with experience dealing with them will be able to tell me what works.
