The most beautiful tree (or plant, for that matter) in our yard is the coral bark maple, Acer palmatum 'Sango Kaku', so lovely that we have bought a second one. The bark is bright coral red all winter, especially pretty when the branches are covered with snow; the foliage is light green in spring and summer and turns to a very bright yellow-gold in the fall. We live in Zone 8, in Western Washington, so this will not be hardy in all areas.

I does well here in North Georgia, as well, which is basically a Zone 7. The great part is that the colder the weather, the brighter the bark color. Anybody have experience with this tree in the north?
