I am having trouble with moles and chipmunks. I have used the garlic sticks, planted alliums, spread insecticides, and even ordered bobcat and wolf urine! I still have tunnels. Help!

Chipmunks are a protected species, so I'm not sure you can do a lot about them, other than invite neighborhood cats into your garden. The bad part about poisons, of course, is the risk to animals "up the food chain." As much as I find the small critters annoying, each hawk that I see talks me out of poisons. For moles, I have had some luck with steel wool stuffed into their holes. The other (almost fun) way is to just walk along and stomp on their tunnels! May not help with the critters, but releases a lot of frustration!

One non-poisonous way to deter moles and voles (not sure about chipmunks) is to spread a granulated material from Gardens Alive! that I believe contains castor oil. It's called Mole Relief. It seems that these little critters hate the smell. It doesn't kill them, just persuades them to move elsewhere. One application is good for a few months.

Poor moles have such an undeserved bad reputation! In truth, they are carnivorous, eating grubs that would otherwise devour the roots of your plants. On top of that, their tunnels help aerate the soil - all good things. Voles are the bad guys, and they will use the topmost mole tunnels, so flattening the surface tunnels won't bother the moles at all (they live much deeper), but should help deter the voles. As for cat patrols, mine are very talented at bringing live voles in as gifts, and releasing them IN THE HOUSE! The Wacky Weeder

I, too, tried all the products on the market and some that weren't. Nothing was working. Finally I picked up these solar powered stakes that you drive into the ground(actually you drive a stake into the ground to make the hole then insert the device). I have had success with the solar powered stakes, they emit a humming sound about every 5 minutes or so. They are a bit expensive (around $25.00/ea.) but they have chased the moles into the pasture and away from my lawn and flower beds. They would have been less expensive if I would have remembered I had them in the lawn before I ran over them with the lawnmower. I averaged one every time I mowed until I finally wised up and left them sticking up where I could see them above the grass. Getting to be a slow learner in my old age.
